Rye Mullis is an American Director and Actor.

Growing up in beautiful Southern California, Mullis plotted how to thwart his parents desire for a sports career, then force them to let him audition for TV shows, so he could make enough money to buy a He-Man Castle Grayskull playset. After a few commercials, an appearance on HOME IMPROVEMENT and stellar performance as Hobie’s friend who was attacked by an alligator… in the ocean… on BAYWATCH; young Rye grew bored with TV performing and turned his attention towards musical theater. After graduating from high school with a pretty sweet scholarship won from playing Guido Contini in Newport Harbor High School’s production of NINE, Rye headed to NYC.

He attended the AMERICAN MUSIC AND DRAMATIC ACADEMY, graduating alongside some current staples in the musical theater world. During his downtime at school, Mullis made a name for himself by directing his classmates on their performances in musical selections they were too young, too bored, or too confused by, If they had to sing from WHOOP-UP, the failed Broadway tryout of BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S or Hamlischs’ SMILE, Rye was ready to help.

After college, Rye began his New York career as the last casting assistant for the legendary Johnson-Liff Casting firm, assisting Geoff Johnson and Vinnie Liff on productions such as THE PRODUCERS, LES MISERABLES and PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. After the retirement of Johnson-Liff, Rye became a casting director with DAVE CLEMMONS CASTING working alongside current casting “powerhouse” Rachel Hoffman (Telsey + Co) and Dave Clemmons on productions such as Broadway’s THE BOY FROM OZ (starring HUGH JACKMAN), BROOKLYN, RING OF FIRE, the infamous IN MY LIFE, STARLIGHT EXPRESS (Bochum and US Tour), JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT, BARE: A POP OPERA and various readings and workshops.

During this time Rye became acquainted with Broadway Producer Ken Davenport who gave Rye his first directing gig, as associate director of the long running off-Broadway hit THE AWESOME 80’S PROM. Mullis also starred in this production as the sleazy, host DJ Johnny Hughes.
While running around the country, Rye became acquainted with the legendary Feld family, producers of large arena spectacles such as DISNEY ON ICE, MONSTER JAM, and their biggest show RINGLING BROS. AND BARNUM & BAILEY, which hired him as the assistant director for the 137th Edition BELLOBRATION (starring Bello Nock). Under the guidance of producers Kenneth Feld, Nicole Feld and Alana Feld, Rye quickly rose through the circus ranks. Next, as associate director to the incredible director Amy Tinkham on the138th and 140th Editions – OVER THE TOP and BARNUM 200 respectively, Rye thrived in the circus world even taking over for a very sick ringmaster once! The Felds finally granted him the position of director for Ringling Bros 5 Gold Unit: BARNUM BASH!
Recently named the youngest director in 144 years for his work on RINGLING BROS. Blue and Red units, Mullis is the director of their two current national arena tours BUILT TO AMAZE and the newest show LEGENDS, which play to millions of people each year. Other directing credits include: Disney’s IMAGINATION MOVERS: Live from the Idea Warehouse Tour, LUCHA VA VOOM – East Coast Tour, BLUE BALLS for the New York Fringe Festival, and most recently ROCK OF AGES for Norwegian Cruise Lines. In the fall of 2011, Rye Mullis and his friends set out to create an underground show that would change the face of brunches in NYC forever. Creating an ensemble of successful Broadway performers who had a love for cartoons, comics and cocktails, they formed the first troupe of the off-off Broadway cult hit: SATURDAY MORNING CARTOONS: LIVE! Performing rep style, the cast receives the scripts the night before the performance and then performs the prestigious “lost” scripts from sacred 1980’s cartoons in front of a cult audience in midtown New York.

Continuing his relationship with his mentor Amy Tinkham, Rye has been her associate on Disney’s THE CHEETAH GIRLS: One World Tour, YANNI: Voices Tour, DANCING WITH THE STARS: Live in Las Vegas, as well as currently developing a new project for DISNEY: THE SOUND OF MAGIC.

Returning to his musical theater roots, Rye recently began a professional relationship with best friend (and former roommate) – Tony nominated director Kristin Hanggi. First serving as associate director for SURF: The New Beach Boys Musical (in Las Vegas) and then on the TONY nominated hit ROCK OF AGES (currently playing on Broadway, Las Vegas, National Tour and on Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ship the Breakaway.) Rye will be working with Ms. Hanggi on an upcoming musical based on a hit movie, headed for Broadway in 2015.

As well as his directing credits, Rye has performed in various Musical Theater productions over the years including MEL BROOKS’ YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN as the Monster, opposite Tony Award winner and personal idol, Roger Bart, CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG as the hilarious Baron Bomburst, the national tour of CURTAINS as bloody stage manager Johnny Harmon, and THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL as Percival Blakeney. Besides the theater, Rye also has a performing background as Professional Wrestler working in Rhinestone tights, known as Mr. Sparkles for various wrestling promotions all around the country.

Rye Mullis spends his downtime collecting action figures and comics, and trying to figure out if he lives in New York City, Los Angeles, Las Vegas or Tampa with his dogs, a teacup poodle named Fifi and a Jack Russell named Bubba. He also hopes that if you read this entire bio you do not think less of him, as clearly you are a better person than he is.
